Formidable

Discover one of Peru’s most extraordinary trekking adventures with the Choquequirao Trek 5 Days / 4 Nights, an unforgettable journey to one of the largest and least-visited archaeological complexes of the Inca civilization.

Known as the “Cradle of Gold,” Choquequirao is dramatically located high above the Apurímac River and surrounded by impressive snow-capped peaks. Often referred to as the last refuge of the Incas, this magnificent citadel remained hidden beneath dense cloud forest vegetation for centuries after the Spanish conquest. Even today, archaeologists continue uncovering new temples, terraces and ceremonial structures, with much of the site still awaiting restoration.

Covering an area significantly larger than Machu Picchu, Choquequirao offers an authentic archaeological experience far from the crowds. Throughout this five-day expedition, you’ll hike ancient Inca trails, cross spectacular mountain landscapes, descend into the impressive Apurímac Canyon and explore diverse ecosystems rich in native wildlife, orchids and breathtaking scenery.

Carefully organized by Auki Cusco Explorers, this trek is ideal for adventurous travelers seeking a challenging route combined with remarkable history, untouched nature and unforgettable Andean landscapes.

Itinerary

Your adventure begins early in the morning as a representative from Auki Cusco Explorers picks you up from your hotel in Cusco. Travel by private vehicle for approximately four hours toward Capuliyoc, enjoying beautiful views of traditional Andean villages, fertile valleys and snow-covered mountains along the way.

Upon arrival at Capuliyoc (2,850 m / 9,407 ft), you’ll meet the horsemen who will accompany the expedition. After organizing the equipment and packing your personal belongings onto the pack horses, the trek officially begins.

Before descending, take time to admire the spectacular panoramic views of the Apurímac Canyon, the distant archaeological complex of Choquequirao, and impressive mountain peaks such as Padreyoc.

The trail descends steadily for approximately three hours until reaching Chikisca, where a freshly prepared lunch awaits.

Following lunch, continue hiking downhill for another two hours toward Playa Rosalinas, where the first campsite has already been prepared by our support team.

Upon arrival, enjoy hot drinks and light snacks before settling into your tent and relaxing prior to dinner.

  • Meals Included: Lunch, Afternoon Tea and Dinner

  • Hiking Time: Approximately 5 hours
  • Difficulty: Challenging

After breakfast, begin one of the most demanding ascents of the expedition.

Cross the Apurímac River before starting a continuous uphill hike toward Marampata, a journey of approximately four hours. As the elevation increases, you’ll enjoy increasingly spectacular views of the surrounding canyon and your first close perspectives of the impressive Choquequirao archaeological complex.

Upon reaching Marampata, stop to enjoy lunch while overlooking the ancient Inca city.

In the afternoon, continue walking for approximately twenty minutes to the campsite located near Choquequirao, allowing easy access to the archaeological site the following morning.

Thanks to the campsite’s privileged location, you’ll have the opportunity to admire the ruins during sunset while watching Andean condors soaring above the canyon if weather conditions permit.

Spend the evening surrounded by one of Peru’s most remarkable archaeological landscapes before enjoying dinner and resting for the next day’s exploration.

Today is dedicated entirely to discovering the remarkable archaeological complex of Choquequirao, one of the most fascinating and least-visited Inca cities in Peru.

After breakfast, begin an extensive guided exploration of this extraordinary site with your Auki Cusco Explorers guide. Throughout the day, you’ll visit its most important sectors while learning about the history, architecture and cultural significance of this impressive Inca settlement.

Explore ceremonial temples, agricultural terraces, residential areas, plazas and the famous stone terraces decorated with white llama figures, one of the most distinctive features of Choquequirao.

Situated high above the Apurímac Canyon, the archaeological complex offers spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including the majestic snow-capped peaks of Salkantay and Humantay.

Although Choquequirao covers an area considerably larger than Machu Picchu, only a portion of the site has been fully restored. Archaeological research continues today, with new sectors being uncovered each year beneath the dense cloud forest vegetation.

After a full day of exploration, return to the nearby campsite where hot drinks and light refreshments will be waiting for you. Relax while enjoying one final evening surrounded by the tranquility of this extraordinary archaeological sanctuary beneath the clear Andean sky.

Following breakfast, begin the return journey toward Cusco.

The morning starts with a gentle hike back to Marampata, where you’ll once again enjoy magnificent views over the Apurímac Canyon. As you retrace the trail, your guide will point out native plants, local wildlife and scenic viewpoints that may have been overlooked during the ascent.

On clear days, the surrounding Andean landscapes become even more spectacular as clouds gradually lift from the canyon, revealing waterfalls and dramatic mountain scenery.

From Marampata, continue with a long descent of approximately four hours toward Playa Rosalinas. Trekking poles are highly recommended for this section due to the steep terrain.

Along the way, enjoy a short rest while sampling fresh local fruit grown in the region, including the area’s well-known cactus fruit.

After arriving at Playa Rosalinas, enjoy a well-deserved lunch before continuing with the final uphill section of the day toward Chikiska Camp, located near a traditional local family property.

Depending on weather conditions and a bit of luck, you may encounter native wildlife such as Andean condors, spectacled bears, hummingbirds and numerous other bird species that inhabit the canyon.
