Itinerary
Your adventure begins early at 4:30 a.m., when your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco. From there, you’ll travel by private transportation for approximately three hours to Soraypampa, the starting point of the hike, located in the beautiful Apurímac Valley.
The trail follows part of the historic Camino Real, gradually climbing through impressive Andean landscapes. After passing a small traditional community, the ascent continues for about an hour and a half along a steeper section of the trail, gaining approximately 366 meters (1,200 feet) in elevation.
Upon reaching the final viewpoint, you’ll be rewarded with the unforgettable sight of Humantay Lake, whose brilliant turquoise waters lie beneath towering snow-covered mountains and impressive glaciers.
Throughout the hike, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of Salkantay Mountain, one of the most sacred peaks in the Andes, rising to 6,279 meters (20,600 feet), as well as the beautiful Humantay Peak, which reaches 5,917 meters (19,412 feet). According to traditional Andean beliefs, this sacred location is often used by local shamans to perform ceremonies honoring Pachamama (Mother Earth).
Spend time relaxing by the lakeshore, taking photographs, enjoying a light snack, or simply appreciating the peaceful surroundings before beginning the descent back to Soraypampa.
A delicious hot lunch will be served while enjoying magnificent views of the surrounding mountains. Afterwards, return by private transportation to Cusco, arriving at your hotel at approximately 5:00 p.m.
